Music

Welcome to the WS/FCS Music Department

The purpose of the WS/FCS music programs is to create life-changing experiences and offer an environment in which students of diverse backgrounds have the opportunity to explore their talents and creativity.  We believe that music education must be available to all students and music possesses the ability to improve the lives of our students.

Elementary Music Education Programs

All K-5 students participate in music class once a rotation (5 to 6 days).  Students learn how to read music, play a variety of instruments from recorder to guitar, sing, and participate in programs at their school.  WS/FCS 5th grade students take a music test at the end of the school year to measure their growth in music literacy.

Music Programs in Grades 6-12

Band, chorus, and orchestra are offered at the middle school levels as an elective offering.  Students are encouraged to continue these pathways into high school, where further opportunities are available including marching band, a capella, small ensembles, etc.  Select schools offer piano as a music elective.

WS/FCS band, chorus, and orchestra students participate in district events including All-County Band, All-County Chorus, All-County Orchestra, and All-County Jazz Band.  Marching bands participate in at least two area parades.

Extended learning and performing outside of the classroom:
Our band, chorus, and orchestra students frequently participate in outside opportunities, including All-District and All-State Band/Orchestra/Jazz Band, NC Honors Chorus, and Music Performance Adjudication (MPA).
