• Atkins High School 2007 Hall of Fame Inductees

     
    Joseph Adams (1955)  - Played football, first team as freshman; played quarterback, halfback, and defensive back, Co-Captain of the first State Championship Team; Made All State as senior. On three State Championship Basketball teams, made All State and was the leading Rebounder; Ran the 100 yd dash and 220 yd dash in track at Atkins HS.  Coached Pop Warner Football.

     

    Ruth Johnson Carter (1943) - Leading forward, Atkins HS Women's Basketball; Attended WSSU, NC A&T, UNCC, UNCG.  Retired from WSSU after 15 years working at WSSU's O'Kelly Library.  Member of Bethlehem Holiness Church as Church Mother. 

    Willie James "Chick" Carter (1942)- Played football at Atkins HS (1938-1941); Veteran, US Navy - WWII (1943-46); Played football at WSSU.  Played professional baseball with Winston-Salem Pond Giants and Brooklyn Cuban Canada (1947-48, 1949-50).  Winson-Salem Fire Department - retired as Captain (1985).

    Samuel E. Cary (1953) - Coached Basketball at Atkins HS leading team to first State Basketball Championships, 1952; Coached Atkins to two straight State Championships and six District Championships- ; Voted "Best Coach in State" and received "The Most Outstanding Coach Award" in 1953.  Principal at Diggs Elementary School.  CIAA Basketball and Football official for 35 yrs; First-ever official elected to the CIAA Hall of Fame.  Received BA from Knoxville College, MA from Columbia University. 

    John Wesley Cuthrell (1953) - Four year football; Graduated NC A&T University (1957); Named to all All American Afro-American 3rd Team (2 years); coached high school football, basketball, track; NC Athletic Official Association for 20 years of outstanding service.  [Atkins Hall of Fame - 2007]

    Joseph Foster (1949) - Starting Forward during year in which Atkins won 22 straight games; State Championship Runner-Up (22-1); played on same team with fellow Hall of Fame member Robert Jackson.  (Anyone with information about the professional life of Joseph Foster, contact Webmaster .)

    Reuban Gilliam (1952) -  Played basketball all four years at Atkins HS; played on the State Championship team, leading team in rebounds.  President, Atkins HS Class of 1952 (3yrs).  US Air Force (Ret), 1954-1974.  Played on the Harlem Magicians in 1957.  All Air Force Basketball Team in Newberry, New Jersey, 1959-1960.  Pastor at North Winston Baptist Church, 1989-present.

    William G. Griffin (1955) - Played on first State Championship Football Team (1953); played offensive end, defense, special teams.  Led team in receiving and tackles made.  Made All-State and was Co-Captain.  Played on three straight State Championship Basketball Teams.  Voted MVP in back-to-back years, leading team in rebound and scoring and was Co-Captain.  Ran 100 and 200 yard dash in track.  Inducted into the WS/FCS High School Hall of Fame in 1986. 

    David Lee Harris (1953) -  Was a three letter man at Atkins HS; pitcher on the baseball team; played basketball and football as well.  Charitable Activities: United Way, Feed the Children, Heart Fund, YMCA, and Disabled Veterans.

    Leo S. Hughes, Jr. (1954) - Played on three State Championship teams at Atkins HS.  Member of the 11th Street Social club.  (Anyone with more information about the professional life of Joseph Foster, contact Webmaster .)

    Jocyelyn V. Johnson - Council Member, Winston-Salem's East Ward; Community Outreach Coordinator in the Department of Physician Service at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Bowman Gray School of Medicine, 1998 - Present.  Served on a variety of community outreach program boards in attempts to improve the health and living conditions of her constituents and neighbors. (Anyone with pictures of Jocyelyn Johnson please contact Webmaster .)

    Victor Johnson, Jr. (1952) -  Served in the US Army (1954-1957).  Played tackle on the football team- he controlled the line play, from 1957-1961; was Co-Captain in 1958.  Graduated WSSU - 1961; MS degree, NC A&T-1965.  Interim Principal at North Forsyth HS - 1996.  Former Chairman and Trustee at St. Paul United Methodist Church.  Founder and Director of Vic Johnson Jr. Golf Clinic.  Major role in establishing new Atkins while maintaining WSPA as a High School.

    James W. Sligh (1953) -  Played on three State Championship Teams at Atkins HS; Made All Conference and All State selections in 1952-1953.  Attended NC Central on basketball scholarship, freshman starting point guard.  All CIAA tournament selection - 1958; BS in PE - 1959.  Retired educator, Junior HS of St Croix Virgin Islands.

    Nicholas F. Thompson (1955) -  Outstanding track and football athlete at Atkins, right tackle on first State Football Championship Football Team.  Paratrooper with the famed 11th Airborne Division.  Attended Southern Technical Institute (division of Georgia Tech in Marietta, Georgia).  Retired from Norfolk Southern Railway, Mechanical Department.

    Lillie Jackson Vanlandingham (1950) -  Outstanding Womens Basketball Player at Atkins HS.  WSSU graduate (1954) BS degree; WSSU Alumni - Life Member; MS - George Washington University (1969).  Teacher and Guidance Counselor in D.C. Public Schools (1957-1991). Census Taker 1995-2000 - Department of Commerce. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. - Life Member.

    Benjamin White Warren (1966) -  Graduated from Virginia Union University (1951). MA from University of Buffalo. Principal Certification from NC A&T State University.  Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Atkins HS.  Won the NC State Championship (1959), career football record (75/19/4).  Retired Principal, North Forsyth HS (1989).  Serves on the Recreation Commission for Playgrounds and Parks.

    Booker Thomas Washington (1954) -  Played Varsity basketball all four years, made All State three years.  Played two years of football at Atkins HS, led the team in rushing yards (Freshman and Sophmore yrs).  Played on the Baseball team for two years (record 22-3).  (Anyone with more information about the professional life of Booker Thomas Washington, contact Webmaster .)

    Donald B. Young (1953) -  Four yr starter for Atkins HS Varsity Mens Basketball Team, Captain of the first State Basketball Championship team.  Played three years of Varsity Football, Captain his Senior year.  Graduated from NC A&T University (1957).  Retired -  Eastern Air Lines (35yrs) - Regional Director.
