-
In 1995, Ed Gannaway (RJR Class of 1968) died while piloting a commercial airliner in a way to save as many passengers as possible. His classmates decided to raise funds to create a scholarship honoring him, and in 1999 they awarded the first Class of 1968 scholarship to a deserving RJR Senior...that paid $500. This year, the Class of 1968 will award a scholarship that will pay out $32,000! This year's recipient was Jarod Alexandra Brown (pictured below, with members of the Class of 1968 Memorial Scholarship Committee).
In early April of this year, the Selection Committee received the scholarship applications from a lot of applicants. Each student applicant already has a GPA of 3.5, so the academic standard is established high on the scale. Also considered equally are school and community service and financial need. The Class of 1968 Memorial Scholarship is RJ Reynold’s largest in value for RJR High School students only, and one of the most sought after awards for the senior class.
Jarod will be attending. UNC - Charlotte. He looks forward to studying Computer Science and Engineering and to designing programs and web applications. Jarod noted on his application … “ I am beyond determined to accomplish my goals with utmost effort … aiding others helps me learn new lessons as I open my eyes to the perspectives of others and try and run a mile in their shoes. “
