    Mayor Allen Joines

Wednesday, May 23, 2018, was Senior Class Day at RJR.  Harry Corpening (President of the RJ Reynolds High School Alumni & Friends organization) went on-stage (at Reynolds Auditorium) to announce the winners of the two RJR Alumni $1,000 Scholarships, as well as the RJR Teacher of the Year (whom the RJR Alumni awarded a check for $1,000).  After that, unknown by RJR Principal Leslie Alexander:  he informed the attendees that his father (Wayne Corpening) was Mayor of Winsrton-Salem for 12 years (1977-1989).  The told them that one of the things he personally knows that Mayors like to do is issue Mayorial Proclamations honoring folks.  Because he is a friend of Allen Joines (the current Mayor), he asked him about an idea for a Mayorial Proclamation.  Mayor Joines liked the idea...and Harry then read this proclamation to the audience (after which he gave Leslie Alexander a check for $1,000 for being named THE Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Principal of the Year).

Some other facts (that were released by RJR in the last week in May) which show the momentum Mrs. Alexander has helped create:

        * Graduation rates have increased from 63% in 2007 to 93% IN 2017!
        * College attendance rates have increased from 74% in 2008 to 92% in 2017!
        * Dropout rates have decreased froom 7.3% in 2008 to 2.8% in 2015!
        * Scholarships have increased from $8.5 million is 2009 to $18 million in 2018!

If you would like to support Leslie in her attempt to make Reynolds Hight School even better:  mail a (tax deductible) donation to the RJR Alumni, and make a note that it is for the "Leslie Fund."  She can then use those dollars to quickly make improvements at RJR!  The address to mail your check is:
