Karen and Billy Rice with their 5 daughters between them
Wednesday, May 22, 2019, was Senior Class Day at RJR. Harry Corpening (President of the RJ Reynolds High School Alumni & Friends organization) went on-stage (at Reynolds Auditorium) to announce the winners of the two RJR Alumni $1,000 Scholarships (Chelsea Hignite and Jack Peatross), as well as the RJR Teacher of the Year (Mrs. Fakhria Luna, whom the RJR Alumni awarded a check for $1,000). After that, he invited RJR alum Karen Rice to the stage. He informed the attendees that she next year would no longer be overseeing the RJR Booster Club Store (after doing so since 2013). Harry informed the attendees that his father (Wayne Corpening) was Mayor of Winston-Salem for 12 years (1977-1989). By being the son of a Mayor for 12 years, he knows that Mayors like to honor Winston-Salem residents who are doing good things, via creating Mayorial Proclamations honoring these individuals. Harry contacted the Mayor's Office, and informed them about the good work Karen had done. They liked the idea of the Mayor honoring Karen Rice. Harry then read this Mayorial Proclamation to the audience.
