Resources for Parents and Families
As a parent or caregiver, you want your student to feel safe at school, have positive relationships with teachers and other students, feel empowered, and engage with their learning experiences.
According to a research team at Gallup, engaged students are 2.5 times more likely to say that they get excellent grades and do well in school. They are 4.5 times more likely to be hopeful about the future than their actively disengaged peers.
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools encourages you to:
- have a designated time each week where you and your student review assignments, projects, and teacher feedback in PowerSchool and/or Canvas
- create a way to display the work you and your student are proud of, including report cards or progress reports
- talk with your student about their day and encourage them to share what they enjoyed learning, what they might need help with, and what they are looking forward to the most (a book they're reading, a project they're working on, etc.)
- keep a calendar for important dates related to school, like events to attend, conferences, PTA meetings, and other opportunities to participate in decision-making in support of your student and their school
- have a designated time each week where you and your student review assignments, projects, and teacher feedback in PowerSchool and/or Canvas
