Volunteer with WS/FCS and Build Confidence in Learning
Academic Tutor
Clearance Level: Unsupervised
Time Commitment: 4 to 8 times per month, 45 minutes to an hour per visit
Job Responsibilities: Support a scholar in a subject of volunteer expertise (or after receiving adequate training), assist with homework or assignments, create a supportive environment for learning, and demonstrate patience while building skills
Skill development expectations: enhanced knowledge of subject matter and development of good study habits
How scholar is impacted: As young scholars experience challenges in academic areas, a tutor can change their mind set and help create better understanding after engaging one-on-one on difficult objectives. An academic tutor can make what seems to be impossible, possible.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Aid School Office Teams
Administrative and Clerical
Clearance Level: Unsupervised
Time Commitment: As need 2 to 60 hours per month
Job Responsibilities: Provide office support at the school, cheerfully welcome and greet scholars and school visitors, walk scholars to class when needed, answer phones, make copies, and offer warm, friendly interactions with scholars and school teams throughout the day.
Skill development expectations: Teamwork, multi-tasking, attention to detail, interpersonal skills across generations, problem-solving
How scholar is impacted: When scholars, families, and visitors start their school visit by being welcomed by a smiling face and hospitable support, it sets the tone for the remainder of the day. By being an administrative/ clerical volunteer, you can also aid school staff with important tasks to ensure appropriate information disseminated by phone or ready for distribution in weekly folders sent home by the school.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Support Teachers
Clearance Level: Unsupervised
Time Commitment: 1 to 20 times per month, 1 to 3 hours per visit
Job Responsibilities: help organize classroom spaces, act as an additional set of hands for student projects, and help as directed by a teacher
Skill development expectations: support positive and creative classroom management and allow teachers greater flexibility and adaptability with creative activities and learning opportunities
How scholar is impacted: It’s the little things that often mean the most. You can make a huge difference in the classroom by lending your support to scholars and teachers. By assisting a scholar with a project, running an errand to the school office, or helping to accomplish seemingly small tasks in the classroom, you allow teachers to continuously support learning.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Help Scholars See More
Dream Seekers Mentor
Clearance Level: Unsupervised
Time Commitment: 2 to 8 times per month, 30 minutes to an hour per visit
Job Responsibilities: Being a positive role model, soundboard, motivator, and providing additional support for a scholar as they navigate new experiences or challenges
Skill development expectations: increased self-esteem and promotion of social Emotional Learning (SEL) by forming a positive relationship
How scholar is impacted: By allowing a scholar to share their thoughts, ask questions, and to acquire the additional support, you can help them to overcome barriers in the classroom and in life. Being a mentor creates a safe space for a scholar to share their dreams, challenges, and triumphs.
Opportunity is available at: Ashley Academy, Easton Elementary, Ibraham Elementary, Hall Woodward Elementary, Diggs-Latham Elementary and Forest Park Elementary.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Re-energize Educators
Duty-Free Lunch Monitor
Clearance Level: Supervised
Time Commitment: 1 to 10 times per month, 1 to 1 ½ hours
Job Responsibilities: Monitoring students in the cafeteria while educators have the opportunity to take a short lunch break.
How scholar is impacted: Educators spend each day in their classrooms teaching, building, and developing scholars of all ages. At times, a 30-minute break from the hustle and bustle of the day is all that is needed to re-energize these hard-working men and women. By volunteering to monitor the cafeteria or a classroom you allow teachers to take a breather and eat their lunch. Help educators continue to put their best foot forward for our scholars.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Assure a Supportive Testing Environment
Exam Proctor
Clearance Level: Supervised
Time Commitment: 1 to 4 times per year during the last 10 days of the school year, 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours per visit
Job Responsibilities: ensure test guidelines are followed by the scholars and test administrators, run errands for the test administrator, walk students to the restroom, and help to maintain a quiet testing atmosphere.
Skill development expectations: ability to comply with exam practices and procedures, flexibility to serve in a variety of proctor roles (roving between classrooms, stationary in one classroom, or monitoring hallways), and ensuring scholars follow all instructions
How scholar is impacted: Testing is not easy. All scholars need a calm, quiet environment to ensure they can achieve at their highest potential after investing much time and energy in learning key concepts throughout the year. As a proctor you support scholars by providing a space clear of distractions to enhance testing success. You can also silently cheer them on!

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Ignite Family Fun
Festivals/Concessions
Clearance Level: Unsupervised
Time Commitment: 1 to 10 times per year, 1 to 3 hours per event
Job Responsibilities: help to plan and organize festivals, work concession stands or activity booths, assist in monitoring spaces and people, assist with set-up and breakdown of events, and make all visitors feel welcome.
Skill development expectations: communication skills as you work with individuals of different experiences and all ages, teamwork, customer service, and responsibility for assigned tasks
How scholar is impacted: Be it a fall festival, a back-to-school carnival, or a sporting event, people love snacks and exciting activities. As a festival/concession volunteer you will ensure a fun, safe, and fulfilling experience for all involved.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Open a New World
Field Trip Chaperone
Clearance Level: Unsupervised
Time Commitment: As needed 2 to 24 hours per event, or overnight
Job Responsibilities: Aid in supervising scholars, ensure safety of participants, assist in the tracking and accountability of student’s whereabouts, and encourage students as they engage in learning objectives for the field trip experience.
Skill development expectations: assist in development of discussion-making skills, enhance interpersonal skills, and stimulate relevance to learning so students better retain details of their firsthand experiences.
How scholar is impacted: Every child deserves the opportunity to explore the world around them by visiting museums, theaters, zoos, historical sites, or attending an extracurricular tournament or event. It has been proven that youth who travel beyond the confines of their neighborhoods have a boost in social and emotional skills, creativity, and imagination. Being a field trip chaperone allows you to help a young scholar access and discover the world around them.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Grow a Greener Tomorrow
Garden and Grounds Volunteer
Time Commitment: Based on volunteer availability and school needs
Job Responsibilities: Help to seed, water, weed, and harvest as part of the upkeep of school gardens. Ensure school grounds are well kept and free of litter or debris, walk the perimeter of school to identify any potential safe hazards, and helping with outdoor beautification projects. Some of this work will be done hand in hand with scholars, and some may require you to work independently or in a small group with other volunteers or district staff.
How the scholar is Impacted: First impressions are important. When scholars arrive at school to a facility that is free of trash and well-maintained both inside and out, they feel that others care. When students see others creating clean spaces for their education, they will be encouraged to do the same.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Heal Hands and Warm Hearts
Health Room Volunteer
Clearance Level: Supervised
Time Commitment: 2 to 30 hours per month
Job Responsibilities: Provide a supportive presence for scholars who are not feeling well and provide support to the school nurse.
Note: Health room volunteers cannot share any information about student’s medical conditions, give medical advice, administer medications, or perform first aid.
Skill development expectations: Expand the quality of care given to scholars dealing with health and/or medical situations.
How scholar is impacted: A little love goes a long way when you are not feeling your best. As a health room assistant, you can provide comfort care to a scholar. It could be as simple as handing a child a band-aid that scraped their knee or as complex as a scholar not feeling well because they did not get enough rest the night before.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Heart Math Tutoring
Heart Math Tutor
Clearance Level: Supervised
Time Commitment: 30 minutes or 1 hour, once a week
Job Responsibilities: Heart Math Tutoring (HMT) trains and supports volunteers as tutors to work one-on-one with elementary students to build foundational math skills and confidence! With the support of an on-site coordinator, volunteers use an easy-to-follow, proven curriculum featuring hands-on activities and games. No math expertise or teaching experience required.
Skill development expectations: Volunteers play games and activities with students that are on their level that help them develop their number sense and strengthen their foundational math skills.
Additional Training Requirements: We provide a two-part training prior to you starting tutoring and there is an on-site coordinator present for all tutoring sessions.
How scholar is impacted: We ask our volunteers to think of themselves as 50% mentor and 50% math tutor. We want to use math as a vehicle for building confidence. Additionally, HMT conducts pre- and post-assessments to measure progress across twelve foundational math concepts. To date, 98% of students have met HMT’s growth target, ensuring that nearly every student has a measurable, meaningful benefit from the program.
At this time, this volunteer opportunity is only available at Bolton Elementary.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Fuel a Scholar’s Soul
Lunch Buddy
Clearance Level: Supervised
Time Commitment: 1 to 20 times per month, 30-45 minutes per visit
Grade Level: K to 5th
Job Responsibilities: Be a positive role model and provide companionship for a scholar
Skill development expectations: increased self-esteem and promotion of social Emotional Learning (SEL) by forming a positive relationship
How scholar is impacted: The development of relationship skills is one of the key elements of a child’s social emotional learning. Lunch is a great time to help a young scholar develop this skill as you create a safe space for supportive conversations and a listening ear – and a little bit of fun. Lunch buddies are encouraged to be present on a consistent basis to have a positive influence on a scholar through a high level of engagement.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Bring Books to Life
Media Center Volunteer
Clearance Level: Supervised
Time Commitment: 2 to 30 hours per month
Job Responsibilities: Provide support to the media center staff by checking-in, sorting, and shelving books, assisting with school bookfairs and other media center related events, and read to small groups of scholars to foster their love for reading.
Skill development expectation: Ability to create a welcoming and quiet environment for scholars, capacity to lift at least 15 pounds (moving books), and ability to read aloud with confidence to small groups of scholars.
How the scholar is impacted: Every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. Reading at grade level by a scholar's third grade year is a good indicator of their future success. Equitable access to books is one way that schools help children reach their potential. As a media center volunteer, you assist scholars in growing a love for reading in a well-organized environment.

Mentor

Reading Buddy
Clearance Level: Unsupervised
Time Commitment: 2 to 8 times per month, 30 minutes to an hour per visit
Grade level: K-5
Job Responsibilities: Read to or assist a child/small group of children in reading
Note: You may be asked to read with multiple scholars during your volunteer session.
Skill development expectations: develop read aloud skills, increase vocabulary, strengthen reading comprehension
How scholar is impacted: Reading is a fundamental skill that helps children learn to make sense of the world around them. It helps them to learn about their neighbors, build social emotional skills, and allows them to be creative and dream big. As a Reading Buddy you can help cultivate a child’s love for reading by allowing them to practice reading and tell you what they have learned as they answer questions about what they read.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Be a Superhero
Become a Reading Warrior today because superheroes don’t always need capes, just patience and time to help students develop a love of reading that lasts a lifetime.
Clearance Level: Unsupervised
Time Commitment: 30 minutes, twice a week
Job Responsibilities: Follow our pre-written lesson plans to support children in the development of fundamental literacy skills. Our curriculum is designed to be implemented by people of all backgrounds; you do not need a background in education to be a successful tutor. We provide training and all the materials you need at no cost to you.
Skill development expectations: Volunteers instruct in the foundations of reading: sound awareness, phonics, and reading text.
Additional training requirements: We provide engaging training that lasts approximately 6 hours. Multiple dates are available for training, as well as follow-up support sessions you may choose to attend.
How scholar is impacted: As a Reading Warrior Volunteer, you become part of the wraparound service continuum that helps students achieve long-term success. You support the student's classroom instruction using evidenced-based elements for teaching reading. Your positive input and the relationship you build is truly a life changing experience for the child and the tutor!

Volunteer Club Coach
Clearance Level: Unsupervised
Time Commitment: Time commitment is based on the activities of the specific club.
Note: Interested volunteers are encouraged to contact school administrators for more details on available opportunities.
Job responsibilities: Serve as an advisor to school-based student clubs, ensure club leaders follow guidelines and/or established operating norms for the club, be a supportive presence at club activities and events.
Skill development:
How scholar is impacted: All scholars deserve the opportunity to explore and live out their passions. Service and specialized clubs allow students to help others, meet like-minded individuals, and develop new skills. A club advisor can serve as a mentor to young people that are looking for ways to strengthen the community, explore new interests, and serve others.

Volunteer with WS/FCS and Be a Team Player
Volunteer Sports Coach
Clearance Level: Unsupervised
Time Commitment: Seasonal commitment based on school needs.
Note: Interested volunteers are encouraged to contact school athletic directors for more details on available opportunities.
Job Responsibilities: assist school athletic staff in coaching and player development, help train athletes on the fundamentals of sports, aid in conditioning athletes using best practices as identified by the coaching staff, serve as a positive role model for scholars, educate scholars on the importance of academic achievement, and teach good sportsmanship.
Skill development expectation:
How the scholar is impacted: No matter what the sport – basketball, cheerleading, swimming, golf – athletic programming builds self-confidence and a sense of belonging for our scholars. As a volunteer sports coach, you can strengthen self-esteem while strengthening athletic skills. Scholars that participate in sports learn social skills and the importance of working with others to accomplish goals.
