    What are Global Schools?

Beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, Speas Global Elementary School began a journey to prepare students for success in an interconnected world. In a Global School, achievement means providing the competencies and skills to all students so they can collaborate effectively in a global economy. The learning community at Speas Global shares the goal of raising student achievement through global learning. We want to ensure that our students have the opportunity to gain the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes for work and life in a globally connected world.

Speas has implemented a Global Theme throughout the school by joining Participate (formerly the Global Schools Network or GSN.)  Participate partners with schools and districts to provide leading-edge technology, comprehensive frameworks and support services. These programs and services impact student outcomes by improving teacher practice through collaborative professional learning.

Participate is an education and economic development initiative, begun in NC, and coordinated by Visiting International Faculty Education.  It began with cooperation and support from U.S. Department of State and North Carolina's State Board of Education, Departments of Public Instruction and Commerce, and the N.C. Business Committee for Education.

For 30 years, educators have used Participate’s professional development and curriculum, language acquisition and cultural exchange teacher programs to create engaging learning environments that empower teachers and inspire students to create impact on a global scale. Participate is a certified B Corp and ‘Best for the World’ honoree headquartered in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Participate involves professional development for teachers at each grade level, along with administrators, to help them look at their core curriculum with an international focus, planning lessons that integrate knowledge of other countries and cultures with the regular curriculum. This is much more than “flags and fiestas”, which are the easy things to see in a culture. Culture is about products, practices, and perspectives, all of which can be influenced by history and geography.  Participate helps teachers integrate this knowledge naturally with other content so that students learn to view the world not only from our own local perspective, but from other perspectives as well. Participate Schools are distinguished by school-wide efforts and commitment to inquiry-based and student-led learning.

At Speas Global each grade level focuses on a particular continent for integration in the core curriculum.  We also began a Spanish Dual Language Immersion program with Kindergarten students in 2013-14. Each school year as that first DLI class advances to the next grade level, we add that next grade level DLI teacher to continually grow our program through 5th grade. Our school staff includes a growing number of international teachers who bring their own cultural perspectives and experiences to our learning community.

More information about Participate (formerly Global Schools Network) and Dual Language Immersion programs can be found on our district webpage all about the opportunities for global programs in WSFCS.
