MARCH 29, 2021 – Youth Art Month and Music in Our Schools Month 2021 was an exciting time at Diggs-Latham Elementary School. As an A+ and Magnet School for Arts Integration and Performance, we look for every opportunity to integrate and celebrate as we learn through the Arts.
Two highlights of the month included our Spirit Week and Virtual Arts Night.
“While this year has definitely presented some unusual challenges, we have utilized technology and creativity to bring our school family together virtually and continue to offer some authentic learning opportunities,” explained Mrs. Amanda Gordon, Art Teacher and A+/Magnet Coordinator.
During Spirit Week, the themes included Decade Day, Art Day, Future Day, Dress-to-Impress, and Primary Color Day. Students and teachers used their creativity to dress in attire commemorating music across the decades, artists and works of art, artists and musicians in the future, formal clothes of a symphony conductor, and artistic colors.
Pictures taken during the week include one of the Ladies in Pink – Principal Cassandra Dobson, Assistant Principal Ana Ortiz and Parent Liaison Diane Castillo.
Each day, members of the arts team and administration made announcements about the themes and shared quotes related to Youth Art Month and Music in Our Schools Month. We also kept our social media active, even with a Facebook and Twitter Party.
For Arts Night, faculty, parents, and students joined the Specialists/Arts Team for a virtual evening of fun through the Arts.
“I thoroughly enjoyed Arts Night along with our students and families who attended,” Dr. Cassandra Dobson, the principal shared.
“It was a great way to end our Youth Art Month/Music in Our Schools Month Celebrations. Even though our group gatherings have to be virtual right now, this year’s virtual events have been quite successful as multiple generations of families have attended and been active online.”
During Arts Night, Mrs. Amanda Nelson – the Dance teacher – led a warm up and dance party, and Mrs. Lisa Morris – the Orchestra teacher – demonstrated how to use found objects at home to play rhythms, even rhythms from some of our favorite video games.
Mr. Barry Friedman – the Physical Education teacher – presented a stretch exercise and a virtual exercise game, and Mr. Rick Sigler – the Band teacher – demonstrated how to use technology to create beats and ultimately compose music.
The evening ended with Mrs. Gordon presenting a digital scavenger hunt and finally a virtual art exhibit of 113 pieces of original student art that was created this year by kindergarten through fifth grade-students.
