Summer Capital Projects

Summer 5 JULY 3, 2019 – For many people with the school system, the summer break means shifting into high gear.

Many construction and maintenance projects would be difficult to do while school is in session. So, during the summer break, crews are hard at work in schools throughout the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system.

“We do this every summer,” said Barry Motsinger, the school system’s Director of Capital Projects. “We spend spring getting ready for this, and, the day the kids leave, we jump in.”

The goal is to have all the scheduled work done by the time students return in August.

“We have had a good start his summer,” Motsinger said. “The first couple of weeks have gone really well.”

The two biggest projects being done this summer are at Forest Park Elementary and at Kernersville Elementary.

At Forest Park Elementary, the work includes replacing the HVAC system, replacing the roof, and replacing the cooler/freezer.

At Kernersville Elementary, the kitchen is being renovated, and the generator is being replaced.

Speas Global Elementary will benefit from the new building being completed for Paisley IB Magnet and Lowrance Middle schools. One of the modular units from Paisley is being moved to Speas. That will enable it to serve more students this coming school year.

Students at Kimberley Park Elementary will also be pleased to find that the lighting has been upgraded, Motsinger said.

Projects being done at other schools this summer include replacing HVAC systems, resurfacing tracks, replacing generators, replacing roofs, rebuilding tennis courts, and replacing windows.

And work on such bond projects as the new home for Paisley IB Magnet and Lowarance Middle will continue.

The money for the projects comes from different sources.

Some projects are paid for with the money voters approved in the 2016 bonds.

Some projects are paid for with what are informally known as two-thirds bonds. Every two years, Forsyth County can issue two-thirds bonds that do not require voter approval. The name refers to a state law that allows to issue bonds up to two-thirds of the amount of its net debt reduction from the previous year.

Work on high school parking lots is paid for with parking fees.
