Winners of District Elementary Science Fair

Science 85 JANUARY 9, 2020 –Seventy-six students from elementary schools throughout the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system participated in the District Elementary Science Fair, which was held on Thursday, Jan. 10 at Kaleideum North.

The winners in third grade through fifth grade category were:

First place – Rachit Chandrakul, fifth grade, Jefferson Elementary, “Soil Electricity: Giving Power to the Powerless.”

Second place – Veda Sanka, fifth grade, Brunson Elementary, “After I Wake Up…Can I Recall My Dreams?”

Third place – Gwen Vogler – fifth grade, Old Richmond, “Does the Nose Know?”

Fourth place – Logan Truskowski, fifth grade, Meadowlark Elementary, “Egg Allergies: No Yolk About It”

Honorable mention – Parker Gaillard, fifth grade, Vienna Elementary, “Tip of the Iceberg”

Fair 65 The winners in the kindergarten through second grade category were:

First place – Blair Wallace, second grade, Vienna Elementary, “Save the Strawberry”

Second place – Larkin Mack, second grade, Piney Grove Elementary, “Step Right Up”

Third place – Aubrie McCarter, second grade, Rural Hall Elementary, “How Do They Stay Warm?”

Each year, the members of the Alpha Pi Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. – who support the school system’s district science fairs by serving as judges and providing meals for students and others – choose a student in each category to recognize with a special award.

This year, those awards went to Blair Wallace and Veda Sanka.

The winners in the third grade through fifth grade category will go on to participate in the Region 5 Elementary Science Fair, which will be held Feb. 1 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
