Glenn High Holds Its Version of "The Masked Singer" Competition
OCTOBER 27, 2020 – The Vocal Point students at Glenn High are holding their own version of “The Masked Singer,” a singing competition in which celebrities face off against each other and appear in elaborate costumes with full-face masks to conceal their identities.
In the Glenn version, the celebrities are staff members who appear as emojis.
In the early stages of the competition, 12 teachers and other staff members created performance videos with the help of the 22 Vocal Point singers. These students helped staff members pick out a song, rehearsed the song with the staff member, listened to the performance and offered constructive feedback, and helped staff members upload their video.
In the early stages of the competition, students in arts classes such as chorus, band, orchestra, dance, theater and visuals art watched and scored each video. This 5-week activity served as a pre-screening to see which staff members would compete for the entire school – think American Idol or The Voice auditions.
The pre-screenings concluded on Thursday, Oct. 22. The videos of the eight staff members who scored the most points in the initial rounds will now compete for the title of the "Glenn High School Masked Singer" with all students at Glenn serving as judges.
On Friday, Oct. 22, Carol Earnhardt, who teaches chorus at Glenn, sent out the following email to Koala, Panda, Lion, Puppy, Rabbit, Squirrel, Fox and Kylo Ren from Star Wars:
You have been selected to compete in the Glenn High School Masked Singer, Staff Edition!! We (Vocal Point students) are so proud of you - and so thankful that you chose to participate in this school-wide activity.
The competition will begin October 26th. Two singers will compete each week and we will announce our winner on December 16th. We will ask teachers to show the videos and allow voting during their second-period class with special arrangements made for Forsyth Tech and Career Center students to vote so that all students can participate.
The staff and students will eliminate one singer per week and will guess the identity of that singer. A drawing will be held each week to award those students and staff who correctly guess the identity of the eliminated singer.
What we need from you:
- If you make it to the second round (Nov. 30 or Dec. 7), we would recommend that you have another song prepared by Nov. 28. If you make it to the final round (Dec. 14-15), we would recommend that you have a third song prepared by Dec. 13 - this one could be a Holiday song.
- We need a picture of you for your reveal. Make the picture ‘fun.’
- We need a list of ‘hints’ that we can use when we ask students to guess your identity. Give hints that won't give your identity away but will give our audience something to consider as they are guessing who you are.
We have worked hard to plan this event and are SO excited about this project. The arts students have had a BLAST watching your videos these past few weeks. Our hope is that we will build community in a remote setting.
Carol Earnhardt and the Vocal Point Students
The winner will be announced on December 16th. The winner will receive a trophy that will be displayed in the main office for all to see.
Videos that did not make it to the final part of the competition will be shown to staff members as an "honorable mention" participant.
“All of the videos are incredible,” Earnhardt said.
“My students and I are amazed at the talent at Glenn High School! So far, the art students have enjoyed watching the videos. This activity has really brightened their spirits and is building community across the campus despite the distance of remote learning.”
