Kindergarten Out of Zone Applications Open Now
The last application period of the school year for Out of Zone kindergarten is open now and will last through Friday, May 27. To fill out an application go online to https://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/Page/122158.
This application period allows for families to choose schools that are outside of their residential zone, as long as there’s space at the school and the family can provide their own transportation. While the district does not generally bus students to schools outside of their zone, students are welcome to attend different schools that are not at capacity. This program also affords families more choice in their students’ educations.
“It serves the dual function of giving families more options for their school choice and helping to increase enrollment at those schools with extra capacity,” said Frank Pantano, Director of Student Assignment for the Office of Choice and Magnet Schools.
The most recent window for Kindergarten Choice and Magnet School applications ran from March 28 through April 22. Unlike Out of Zone, students that applied for Magnet and In-Zone Choice schools are provided with transportation. For grades 1-11, many families missed the initial window between November 6 and January 22 and are still reaching out about their school for next year. Grades 1-11 also have their own Out of Zone period which ran from January 17 through January 31.
Pantano says it’s important for families to keep an eye out for application periods when they arise to get the best possible results out of the opportunity.
“The more people that engage in the magnet and choice process, during the appropriate time, the easier it is for us to make sure schools have the space and staff to accommodate their incoming students,” Pantano said.
