WS/FCS Board of Education Meeting Recap for Tuesday, June 28
June 29, 2022 - Superintendent Tricia McManus’ contract with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools was renewed through 2025 during the Board of Education’s regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday night.
During her first year in her position, McManus helped keep the district steady throughout the continued onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic while also pushing for more ambitious educational goals, notably including making sure that 90% of kindergarteners in the district are reading at grade-level proficiency by third grade in the year 2025. She has also built a strong reputation among her peers for the active role she takes in hearing stakeholder concerns and finding solutions.
Going forward, McManus feels that there’s still plenty of work to do to make WS/FCS as great of a place to learn and grow as possible, and she’s up to the task of leading the district to where it needs to be.
“We’re not going to rest until we’ve really achieved excellence for every student,” McManus said. “I’m looking forward to it. We’re going to get some great results for our city and for our county so that you can be proud of us.”
Other subjects covered at the meeting included:
- Recognitions for the UNCF Scholarship recipients and the Queen Juneteenth court
- Discussion of contracts for student monitoring technology, security enforcement and other service providers
- An update on Project Impact and its success in promoting literacy in the 2021-22 school year
- Continuation of the school system’s mask-optional policy given the current state of COVID-19 in Forsyth County
The board will take a break from meetings in July and will return on Tuesday, August 9 for their next regularly scheduled meeting.
