YMCA Seeks Volunteer Shoppers for Bright Beginnings Program
August 4, 2022 - The Kernersville Family YMCA will support 150 Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools students in their back-to-school shopping next week with their Bright Beginnings program, and they still have room for more volunteers.
For over a decade, volunteers at the YMCA have been taking elementary school students, primarily those from Title I schools, on a shopping trip ahead of the new school year to stock up on clothes and classroom supplies. Many of these students come from families whose financial situations don’t guarantee them new school clothes and supplies every year, and the sharp inflation that the United States has experienced this year has made shopping even tougher for them. By sponsoring a child for $130, donors can make a huge difference in the self-esteem of a child beginning a new year of school.
“Many of these kids have always relied on hand-me-downs for their new clothes and have never really had anything that was all their own,” said Chris Booth, Executive Director of the Kernersville Family YMCA. “This is a rare chance for them to go to the store and pick out something that they want.”
While the YMCA welcomes independent donations, what they want most right now is volunteers to go shopping with the children. Shopping buddies help guide students through their trip to make sure they get everything they need. They also get to see firsthand the joy that Bright Beginnings brings to the children it impacts.
“It’s something really special for the kids, but I think the volunteers often get even more out of it than the kids,’ Booth said.
Bright Beginnings will take place between 8 am and 12 pm on Saturday, August 13 and will convene at the Kernersville Family YMCA. To sign up or donate, contact Chris Booth by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
