Board of Education Wrap-Up

November 29, 2023 – The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Board of Education heard an update on a potential website hosting and mass communication contract with Apptegy during their meeting on Tuesday night.

The district’s current website hosting and mass communication contract is ending in June of 2024, at which point the entire Blackboard service is sunsetting following its acquisition by Finalsite. WS/FCS Communications and Technology has been analyzing options for a future contract with Finalsite and other providers and is recommending a new partnership with Apptegy. The transition will take several months to complete, so a decision will have to be made by January of 2024.

A contract with Apptegy would cost $181,900 for the first year, plus an additional $50,000 one-time cost for conversion/development, design, and migration, and would cover all school and district websites, the district mobile app, and the platform used to email, call, and text parents and staff. Chief Communications and External Relations Officer Brent Campbell told the board members that this option would be beneficial to the district for its competitive pricing, intuitive interface, mobile device optimization, customizability, comprehensive technical support for school webmasters, and positive feedback from community stakeholder focus groups. While the board hasn’t voted on the contract yet, several of them voiced optimism that Apptegy would be a valuable partner for the district.

“It’s a great deal,” said Board Vice Chair Alex Bohannon. “With all of the benefits, I’m very excited for the rollout.”

Also on the board’s agenda for the evening were:

  • A performance by the Hanes Magnet Middle School A Capella Choir
  • Recognitions for schools that won Clean and Green Awards from Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful
  • Approval of school improvement plans, a contract with the American Reading Company for Flat Rock Middle School, a contract amendment for plumbing labor and astroturf, and a guaranteed maximum price for early procurement of electrical components at East Forsyth High School

The Board of Education will meet again on Tuesday, December 12 at 6:30 pm.
