Hanes Magnet Middle School Named National Magnet School of Distinction

Hanes Magnet Middle School has been named a National Magnet School of Distinction. The honorable title comes from Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools.

Hanes Magnet Middle School is a STEM magnet school, which focuses learning on science, technology, engineering and math. Those principles are integrated throughout the curriculum. Project Lead the Way (PLTW): Gateway to Technology, is a pre-engineering elective providing students with hands- on exposure to robotics, flight and space, design and modeling, the science of technology, energy and the environment, innovators and makers, app creators, and the magic of electrons.

Hanes also offers a broad range of STEM related extracurricular activities and a wide range of arts-based electives. Hanes prides itself on meeting the needs of all learners, including academically gifted students.

Hanes Principal Robin Willard says, “We are school with a diverse population. We have a wide range of academic abilities and student needs. Receiving this designation really proves that other educators across the country see value in the ways we teach and reach all of our learners at Hanes. Recognition for embracing our differences and using that to integrate unique, strong instruction only motivates our teachers to continue outstanding work in our classrooms.”

To receive the national awards, the school had to submit a detailed application. A panel of educators scored the application. The school is judged on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.
