On Wed. 10/2, thirty-one orchestra students traveled to the Stevens Center to attend a concert by the Sphinx Virtuosi, one of the nation’s most dynamic professional chamber orchestras comprised of 18 top Black and Latinx classical string soloists. (And were dressed in Hanes colors!) Well versed in all concert literature, they love to bring excellent, if lesser known, music from their own heritages to audiences. They played pieces from their “For Justice and Peace” tour: fugues from Venezuela and Argentina, which used tango rhythms and unconventional bowing techniques as well as a new piece by one of their bassists (we were the third audience ever to hear this piece!) which was inspired by thoughts on racial/human justice. We were definitely inspired by the music and the vibrant performers!
