Winners of Dr. Maya Angelou Essay Contest Recognized at Board Meeting

Win 34This comes to us from Karen Meier, the Director of Library Media Services for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools:

“We are pleased to announce the winners for the Dr. Maya Angelou Essay Contest,” Meier said. 

“This contest was held in conjunction with the Dr. Maya Angelou Day of Reading. 

“Students wrote an essay in response to a prompt that was publicized and worked with a teacher on editing and proofreading to write their story of overcoming a time when they felt marginalized, disenfranchised, or stereotyped and how our community becomes stronger when young people overcome these challenges.”

“The essays were scored by a group of judges from the community and district personnel.

The winners are:

First Place – Mimi Kelley, Atkins Academic and Technology High

Second Place – Taylor Ellerbe, Parkland High

Third Place – Emily May, East Forsyth High

The winners be recognized at the May 25 meeting of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education.
