Making the Grade Together

December 15, 2017

Dear Parent:

We provide regular updates to you about your student’s academic progress by sending home a report card. Once a year, we provide you with updates on our school’s achievements through the North Carolina School Report Card. This Report Card includes important information about school and student performance, class sizes, attendance, school safety, instructional resources, and teacher quality. There is also information about how our school measured against federal participation targets and the number of suspensions and expulsions in our school.

Each year, schools receive a letter grade to describe its performance. These school performance grades are comprised of student achievement (80 percent) and growth (20 percent). Report data is available for our school district and for the state’s education system as a whole.

Our school’s full Report Card can be found on the NC School Report Cards’ website at , Our school district’s report is also available on the Report Card website. School Report Cards are provided for regular public schools, charter schools, and alternative schools that were open during the 2016-17 school year.

The numbers only tell part of the story. At Whitaker Elementary, we are proud of the following efforts underway. Beginning with the core, invaluable education professionals skilled and diligent in their work, targeted efforts to support closing the achievement gap (reason for the + in our grade), community engagement, social and emotional learning awareness, professional development linked to the latest education research and a compliment of afterschool activities.

State and local education leaders are committed to providing parents with more information about schools. Well-informed parents who participate in their children’s education and school enhance the learning environment for students and educators alike. In addition, the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires schools to issue Report Cards.

At Whitaker Elementary your involvement is very important to our success! I encourage you to review our Report Card, then feel free to contact me directly to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. I welcome your feedback regarding other interests you have in our school.

Thank you for allowing me to share this Report Card with you and thank you for supporting our efforts to provide your child with a high-quality education.
