Reading
We are still in novels and really spending time clarifying answers, finding figurative language and other comprehension strategies often expected throughout the year. Students are progressing with reading, but still don't have the inner desire to just pick up a book and "read". Please encourage your child to read for pleasure as much as possible, so you won't have to beg them to in the upcoming school years
Writing
I will be starting students on their handwriting book for the remainder of the year, expecting a page per week. The booklets were bound at our central office print shop and not cheap! I intend for them to remain at school, unless you need to see or they are out for an extended period of time. This will be a weekly classwork grade I am going to try something new with nightly summaries and limit to during the school day since so many are "forgetting" to do, even though it is written in their agendas. If students do not get done during the allotted time, they may do at home, but if not turned in, grades are reduced to near nothing for the week of summarizing.
Math
Fractions are still in the lessons for this week. This is a difficult concept to grasp when only dealing with numbers. I have encouraged students to draw and label for over 3 weeks now. Many do not wish to do so. Trying to keep all calculations in their head usually presents several frustrations. Please suggest and monitor as they do their nightly homework to grab another sheet for calculating and attach that sheet with homework. Too often, students are coming in with answers and saying they understand, but when faced with calculating on their own failing the task. I really want to see the work so I can better serve them
Science/SS
