Statue and Model

Sculpture and ModelsLewisville Middle School art students are leaving a mark on their community – or, more accurately, a pawprint – with the newest installation in the Town of Lewisville’s Sculpture Scavenger Hunt.

The local art tour already includes sculptures at the public library and the Mary Alice Warren Community Center. In an effort to help students connect more with their hometown, educators at Lewisville Middle had seventh graders spend time during the second quarter of last school year designing projects that could represent the school in the gallery. 100 students made cardboard models, and then students, teachers, and community members voted for their favorites.

The winning design came from Mackenzie Doolittle and incorporated a heart into the center of the Lewisville Lions pawprint logo. The design was then fabricated into a permanent fixture by local metal shop Metalmorphosis. After a creation process that lasted over half a year, Lewisville Middle now proudly displays a piece of homegrown art that will contribute to the town’s art scene for decades to come.

PlaqueArt Teacher Elizabeth Miller says that this project was an exciting and engaging event for the whole school. She wants young artists to understand that they can play a valuable role in shaping the culture of their community, and in circumstances like this, it’s clear that it’s never too early to start.

“The town of Lewisville has some exciting art things stirring, and we thought, ‘let’s do this at the middle school, too!’,” Miller said. “We’re so proud of these kids and their contributions to LMS. Dream big, artists!”
