Board of Education Wrap-Up

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Board of Education discussed criteria for a company to manage the new superintendent search during their special called meeting on Tuesday night.

The board put out a request for proposals for superintendent search firms in June and has since closed the deadline for applications. They will vote to appoint a search firm during their next meeting on August 12. Their job on Tuesday night was to establish a rubric that would be used to select the best possible search firm for the district’s need.

The board members agreed to the following criteria:

-          Experience with similar superintendent searches in districts of comparable size, demographics, goals and initiatives, and academic achievement

-          Evidence of community engagement experience with examples of working with multiple stakeholders

-          Evidence of strong communication structures in working with the board

-          Availability for staffing and conducting the search project

-          Resumes of personnel assigned to manage the project that demonstrate adequate qualifications

-          Overall cost of services

-          Projected timeline for completion

Chief Attorney Dionne Jenkins will organize these criteria into a 100-point weighted rubric. At the board’s request, extra weight will be assigned to the cost of services, experience with similar districts, and evidence of strong communication structures.

The board also heard an update on the budget for this fiscal year and last, then approved a formal letter to the local legislative delegation requesting financial support to address last year’s budget deficit. More information on the budget discussion will be available in this week’s Community Budget Update.

The Board of Education will meet again on Tuesday, August 12, at 6:30 pm.
