Magnet School Showcase

Families interested in learning what magnet schools can do for their students’ future are invited to the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds on Saturday, November 1, for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools’ Annual Magnet School Showcase.

Magnet schools stand out because of their schoolwide commitment to a particular field of study. If a student has a strong interest in one subject, attending a magnet school gives them the opportunity to go more in-depth with that subject while being surrounded by teachers and classmates who share their passion.

The magnet application period runs from November 1 until January 30. Any WS/FCS student can apply to go to a magnet school instead of their residential school, tuition-free. Applications can be filled out online here.

Director of Magnet Schools Pamela Henderson says that the showcase presents a model of public education that challenges students and brings them joy at the same time. By letting the students choose their own path, magnet schools empower them to learn to the best of their abilities.

“Every magnet school in our district offers a unique way for students to discover their strengths and apply them with purpose,” Henderson said. “Whether it’s through the arts, STEM, global studies or health sciences, we want students to see that learning can reflect who they are and who they hope to become.”

WS/FCS has 21 magnet schools whose focuses range from health sciences to performing arts to world languages to career apprenticeships. Magnet schools draw diverse students from all over the district, and each school has a unique campus culture.

At the Magnet School Showcase, staff from each of the district’s magnet schools will be available to speak with prospective students and families about the unique benefits their schools can offer. Current students will also attend to demonstrate what they’ve learned in class and explain why they choose magnet education.

The Magnet School Showcase is on Saturday, November 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, located at 569 Fairgrounds Boulevard in Winston-Salem. Parking is free at Gate 7 off Shorefair Drive.

Several magnet schools will also have dedicated open houses and magnet recruitment events over the next three months, which are listed on the district’s events calendar.
