Two students share book

Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, a new North Carolina law (House Bill 805) gives parents and guardians greater access to and control over the library books their children may check out from school or classroom collections for independent reading purposes. Below is an overview of what this means for you and how you can easily manage your child’s access to library and digital materials.

What the Law Says

House Bill 805 requires all school districts to provide parents with:

  • Access to Library Catalogs: Each school must make its library book catalog available online so parents can search all titles available for student checkout. These are for a student's independent use with the intent to be borrowed and returned.

  • Parental Choice: Parents may choose specific books that their child is not permitted to borrow.

Destiny Parent Portal Access

Our district uses Destiny to catalog and manage all school library collections. Parents have access to the online Destiny catalogs by clicking the Destiny Parent Portal link in the bottom of your school’s homepage and signing in.

Parents who wish to limit their child’s access to specific books in the school library may do so directly in Destiny. Directions for how to set these preferences are available online.

Accessing Digital Books with Sora

Students also have access to digital books through Sora, our district’s online reading platform. Parents can review the available titles and manage their child’s access to digital content. Directions for setting restrictions in Sora can be found online.

Classroom Libraries

Teachers are currently working to catalog the books available in their classroom libraries. An updated classroom catalog will be available and linked on each school’s website in the spring of 2026. Schools are working with volunteers to finalize classroom catalogs. Once the catalogs are online and searchable, if you would like to limit your child’s access to specific books in their classroom library, please contact your child’s teacher directly.

We appreciate your partnership in supporting your child’s reading journey. Our goal is to ensure that every student has access to engaging, age-appropriate materials while honoring each family’s preferences.
