Capital Bond Project Updates
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Board of Education heard updates on the two remaining projects from the 2016 bond during their Buildings and Grounds Committee meeting on Tuesday night.
Construction on the new Brunson Elementary School campus is making progress. Although the project has experienced a few delays related to weather and thorough brownfield safety testing, the school is on track to be completed by July 2026. Move-in dates of August 2026 and December 2026 are both being discussed with school staff to determine what they find least disruptive to learning.
East Forsyth High School also hit an important milestone in its renovations over the holiday break when staff were able to move out of modular units and into the school’s newly renovated 600 and 700 buildings. Executive Director of Construction and Planning Darrell Walker is proud of the improvements and was pleased to see how happy East Forsyth teachers were as well.
“I actually saw a teacher in tears over the holidays as she moved in and saw all of her new stuff,” Walker said. “It’s a really impressive space.”
East Forsyth’s cafeteria courtyard expansion is also complete now. Renovations to the 300 and 400 buildings, as well as minor improvements to the 800 building, will begin this month and should be completed by August.
Winston-Salem Open Donation
Jeff Ryan from the Winston-Salem Open appeared before the board during their regular meeting to present a $20,000 donation towards the district’s middle school athletics program. The Winston-Salem Open has made similar annual donations for several years, and Ryan says it’s an honor to support the district’s aspiring athletes in their ambitions.
“It is a genuine pleasure to be up here every year in this role,” Ryan said.
House Bill 805
To comply with North Carolina House Bill 805, which became law in July 2025, the board voted during their Policy Committee meeting in favor of amending their Parental Involvement Policy. Written parental permission would be required for “students sharing sleeping quarters with a member of the other biological sex during an activity or event authorized by the school, unless the member of the other biological sex is the student’s immediate family member”.
After public comment, assuming there are no additional changes or updates needed, the board will consider for final approval at the next board meeting on January 27. If the board receives a lot of comments or if there is a need for discuss further, then it would go back to policy committee in February.
The Board of Education will meet again on Tuesday, January 27.
