Four Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools magnet schools were recognized for excellence with national awards from Magnet Schools of America.
Atkins High School, John F. Kennedy High School, and The Downtown School were all named Magnet Schools of Excellence, the national magnet organization’s highest honor. Additionally, RJ Reynolds High School was named a Magnet School of Distinction. Schools are chosen by a panel of educators based on “an exemplary commitment to academic standards, curriculum innovation, desegregation/diversity efforts, specialized teaching staffs and parent and community involvement”.
“WS/FCS continues to set the standard for specialized education with four schools earning top national honors from Magnet Schools of America,” said WS/FCS Director of Magnet Schools Pamela Henderson. “These awards are based on a rigorous evaluation of academic achievement, student diversity, and how effectively a school integrates its unique theme into every classroom.”
Magnet schools offer specialized, theme-based curricula designed to engage students' specific interests. By focusing on areas like STEM at Atkins, the arts at Reynolds, or career and technical education at JFK and DTS, these programs foster diverse learning environments that prepare students for higher education and the modern workforce. Attending a magnet school is a unique and rewarding experience that helps both students and families feel more invested in their educational journey.
“Our magnet philosophy is built on the belief that every child deserves meaningful, engaging learning experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence,” said Dustin Haley, magnet coordinator for The Downtown School. “Every day, I see the care, creativity, and commitment our staff brings to their classrooms, along with the incredible support our families provide.”
WS/FCS is home to 21 magnet schools with a wide range of curricula and cultures. Interested students and families are encouraged to research their options, meet with staff at magnet schools, and apply as soon as possible – a world of opportunities awaits!
“As magnet coordinator, I am proud to continue to work with all Atkins stakeholders to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible for our students,” said Monta Ervin, magnet coordinator for Atkins High School. “This award is a powerful celebration of our collective commitment to excellence.”
