We are pleased to share an important update about Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) and how it will be used to support student learning in Winston‑Salem/Forsyth County Schools. Beginning February 2, middle and high school students will have limited access to selected platforms that meet district requirements for safety, data privacy, and appropriate use.
What Is Generative AI?
Generative AI refers to computer tools that can create new content—such as text, images, summaries, or explanations—based on information they have been trained on. These tools do not replace teaching or learning. Instead, they can support students with brainstorming, studying, organizing ideas, practicing skills, and exploring topics more deeply.
WS/FCS is committed to preparing all students to be Future Ready. Providing guided access to Generative AI tools is an important step in helping students develop the skills they need in an increasingly digital world—safely, responsibly, and with educator support.
District Guidelines
WS/FCS has adopted districtwide Generative AI Guidelines to ensure safe, responsible, and age‑appropriate use. These guidelines help us stay aligned with state and national expectations around AI literacy and will be referenced in Policy 6161: Acceptable Use of Technology.
You can view the complete set of guidelines online.
Student Access
While educators have had access to Generative AI tools, students have not previously been able to use them on our district network. The following platforms will be available for secondary student use:
School AI (high school only access)
Please note: This access does not mean the district has purchased or endorsed these platforms. It simply means students will be permitted to access them through our district network.
AI Hub Now Available
The district has created a District AI Hub, which serves as a one‑stop resource for students, families, educators, and community members.
