DINE WS/FCS will kick off another year of its summer meal program with a public event at Clemmons Middle School from 5 pm to 7 pm on Friday, April 24.
For many kids, summertime means food, friends and fun. For families who count on school breakfast and lunch, however, the summer months can be stressful, as families have to stretch their food budgets even further. To combat this, WS/FCS provides free summer meals to kids aged 18 and younger at sites across the community.
There’s no paperwork to fill out – just visit a site during mealtime and your child can receive a fresh, nutritious, delicious meal for free. Children do not have to be WS/FCS students to receive food. They only have to be children under 18 years old.
Starting this year, the program will also allow families to pick up bundled to-go meals instead of eating on-site. Rising summer heat has led to decreased participation in the program over the last few years, even among families who need it, and staff hope the take-home option will better meet these families’ needs. Eating on-site will still be an option, but families are encouraged to consider take-home meals.
To launch this year's program and help families get prepared, everyone is invited for an evening of fun, food, and engagement at the official summer kickoff event. This event will feature more information on summer meals, a farmer’s market, activities for kids, and more. It will also be a chance for families to register for the take-home meal option.
The summer meals program features a wide variety of healthy foods, including whole grain biscuits, pancakes, a healthy varieties of breakfast pizzas made with low-fat cheese and whole grains, whole grain chicken nuggets, pizzas, sandwiches, fresh fruits and vegetables, 100% fruit juice and low-fat milk.
