School Closed May 1: Schools will be closed for students on Friday, May 1. Twenty-five schools and departments determined that they would not be able to operate safely due to staffing shortages, so the day has been changed to an RS Day. Wednesday, May 27 will now be the last day of school.
May 1 is the North Carolina Association of Educators’ Day of Action, an event supported by the local educator's association. Approximately 900 WS/FCS staff members, including teachers, administrators, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and more have requested the day off.
Local Budget Proposal: The Board of Education approved a request to the county for next year’s budget. This proposal includes a base budget of $177.8 million and requests an additional $33.5 million to help meet all student needs and make up for shortfalls in state and federal funding. The complete proposal can be viewed here.
Audit Presentation: The board also heard a presentation from Forvis Mazars about the district’s annual independent audit. All the corrective measures that the audit calls for are already underway and will be completed by June 30. The presentation is available to view here.
The board will meet again on Tuesday, April 28.
