Every student at Kimberley Park Elementary School and Cook Literacy Model School got a free pair of shoes today thanks to a generous partnership between Rack Room Shoes, Shoes That Fit and the Chris Paul Family Foundation. The organizations made it a special occasion for the students by hiring a DJ and bringing in mascots from Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University. They also took care of staff by bringing in food and giving every staff member a $100 gift card.
Principal Diamond Gwyn from Kimberley Park, which received another big donation of shoes from Fleet Feet last week, says that her school's culture is stronger because of community partners like these. Having shoes that fit means having one less obstacle to focusing and succeeding in the classroom, and plenty of students will feel more secure at school because of these donations. It's also just comforting to know that Winston-Salem and Forsyth County are full of people who want to support them.
"The students' excitement is enough to make this a special day, but the fact that we can come together and feel this kind of community support makes it even better," Gwyn said.

We are very grateful to Bookmarks and author Leslie Vedder for choosing Cook Literacy Model school as one of the schools to launch her new middle grades book, The Labyrinth of Souls. Ms. Vedder presented to students about the process of becoming an author and the qualifications (or lackthereof) required to publish your writing. Every participating 4th-5th grader got a free, signed copy of the book, courtesy of Bookmarks!

During 4th and 5th grade library specials, students read the book "Blizzard" by John Rocco, then used the engineering design process to build a snow plow attachment for a Sphero robot. The challenge was to create a plow that could clear all the "snow" (aka the cotton balls) off the road in three minutes or less. Great job, scholars!

Ms. Lawrence's class leads the September attendance challenge with a 95% attendance rate, but Ms. Thomas and Ms. Gregory's classes are right behind with 93.9% and 93.4% respectively. Anyone can still win with great attendance next week! Mr. Stewart, Ms. Craver, Ms. Pappas, and Ms. G's class are all over 90%. It's really close and every day you come to school counts for your class! We'll announce the winner next Thursday.
