Career Day

We were excited to host a Career Day and Earth Day Celebration on April 22.

Career Day
“The team did a great job connecting with the community and organizing an engaging day of realistic and relevant learning for students,” stated Principal Dr. Cassandra Dobson.

Earth Day

“Student engagement, Social and Emotional Learning, and Community Partnerships are important aspects of all we do at Diggs-Latham,” shared School Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Malarie Winfield.

Career Day
Career Day was a half-day event during which classes walked through hands-on activities and interactive presentations by local community and business leaders. Sgt. Selena Ligons, with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department, greeted classes with her colorful car as students received their choice of swag from keychains to stickers and coloring books while learning about the career. Members of the Forsyth County Fire Department and EMS Department were a highlight as students were enamored by the lights and sirens as well as seeing inside the vehicles. Other Career Day guests included website designers, a pediatrician, and a local physician’s assistant just to name a few. Students also had several questions for Judge Alexander and had fun role-playing with Atwell Ford Real Estate as they sold and bought homes in full business attire. Magnet Coordinator, Nicole Gottfied, and students in the Health Sciences Department from Kennedy High School joined us to talk about career opportunities in the medical field. Students wrapped up Career Day at the Reflection Station by writing and drawing about what they learned as they begin to consider future careers.

Career Day
In the afternoon, classes celebrated Earth Day through campus beautification, planting in the garden, creating bird feeders, and enjoying a fun treat.

“Earth Day was a huge success,” shared Kamilah Franklin, School Nurse. “It would not have been possible without our volunteers, PTA, and community businesses who volunteered time and resources.”

Earth Day
Classes chose to either visit the school vegetable and herb garden to plant seeds they have been watching grow or create bird feeders and hang them in select trees. Each class also worked in the grassy area outside their classroom window or around their assigned playground to make sure it was clear of any debris. Students ended their Earth Day Celebration by enjoying a sweet treat, traditional “dirt cake,” consisting of pudding, crushed cookies, and a gummy worm.

“Students really got a kick out of the “dirt and worm” treats,” explained Ms. Traci Latta, Assistant Principal. “We want to give a huge shout out to Mr. Phillip Boyd and his students from Reynolds High School in his Foods 2 class who prepared the treats and served our students.”

The Career Day and Earth Day celebrations integrated aspects of our Magnet Theme, Character Education, and integration of the 4 R’s of Student Engagement. Staff, students, parents, and members of the community came together to present an authentic experience for students.

“It was really fun and exciting. I met so many important people,” stated Yuli Garay, 4th grade. “When I grow up, I want to be a judge.”
