The first-ever Junior vs. Senior basketball game brought energy, surprises, and plenty of excitement to campus this spring. Students and teachers packed the gym to watch the friendly competition and cheer on both teams.
“Every player played their heart out, even though the juniors lost. It was still really exciting to watch everyone give it their all,” said MCF junior and spectator Amiah.
Both teams showed determination throughout the game. While scoring proved challenging at times, the players stayed focused and worked together on the court. “Honestly, the most challenging part was being able to score the ball. Overall, the team did good on defense, but we didn’t have a lot of people who could score, so that was our biggest challenge. Our communication couldn’t have been better,” said MCF junior and player Donovan. He added, “I feel like we handled pressure pretty well. Overall, the team was real open about everything beforehand, which made it easier to play with them. It was a funny group of people.”
Teachers said the game is valuable for more than just the competition. “I think the event gave students a sense of belonging. It’s nice to have opportunities to connect with students and teachers outside of class,” said Ms. Mickey.
Many also enjoyed the lighter moments throughout the event. At halftime, the junior team performed “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys. During the fourth quarter, Mr. Barton, an English teacher and the juniors’ coach, subbed in to guard Mr. McNeil, an English teacher and the seniors’ coach.
“It was hilarious watching the teachers play and Mr. Jordan getting mistaken as a player and Mr. Green’s reaction on the sidelines—I’ve never laughed so hard in my life,” said Ms. Mickey.
Ultimately, the seniors won, but the excitement of the game had many people hoping the this isn’t the last time we host an event like this. “I think we should do this every year—basketball in the spring and soccer in the fall,” said Ms. Mickey.
