Congratulations to Natasha Young, this year's recipient of the Ester Page Hill Award for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Teaching from the North Carolina Art Educator's Association's Committee on Multiethnic Concerns. The award is given to educators who support inclusive, multiethnic art education through their classes. Young is a visual arts teacher at Northwest Middle School and has led her students to earn a variety of national awards during her 28 years in education. She is also the school's yearbook advisor, talent show coordinator, hospitality committee chair, news team advisor, communications team advisor, and art club sponsor. Way to go, Mrs. Young!

The Board of Education presented 12 schools with Clean and Green Awards during their latest meeting. The Clean and Green Initiative, a partnership with Keep Winton Salem Beautiful and the Garden Club Council, encourages schools to reduce litter, provide environmental education, and beautify their campuses. Student/Principal Switch of the Day
Congratulations to 7th-grade student Makenzie Beard! Makenzie ranked in the Top 5% of NC Check-ins and earned the exciting opportunity to serve as Principal for the Day.
Today, Principal HL became a student, following Makenzie's full class schedule. Makenzie not only dressed the part but also displayed leadership, integrity, and drive in her role as Principal.

Northwest Middle School celebrated student citizenship last week with their Teacher's Choice Awards.
Every teacher gets to choose one student out of all of their classes and present some of their highlights for the year at an awards ceremony. Winners receive a gift certificate and attend a special reception with their friends and families. Principal Intern Charmeka Foster says that the event is an important acknowledgement of good will between students and teachers, and that it "shines a light on students who are simply exceptional human beings".
