The Board of Education recognized eight magnet schools who earned grants and awards for their innovative programming during their meeting on Tuesday night.
Brunson Elementary School, Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy, Wiley Middle School, and Flat Rock Middle School all received Burroughs Welcome Grants for creating projects that foster inquiry-based learning, support for teachers, and hands-on enrichment for students.
Atkins High School, John F. Kennedy High School, The Downtown School, and Reynolds High School all won national merit awards from Magnet Schools of America. Well done, magnet schools!

Congratulations to Amy Harlee and the Reynolds High School Popular Music Band for their outstanding presentation at the Department of Public Instruction on Thursday! Part of the department's Winter Performance Series, the show was a hit with employees and the student musicians made a great impression. Dr. Laura A. Stauderman, K-12 dance and visual arts consultant for NCDPI, saw the show as a positive reflection on the school's educators and the results they create in class.
"The students represented RJ Reynolds with pride and conducted themselves in a professional manner," Stauderman said. "Their mastery of multiple objectives from the Standard Course of Study was evident in all that they performed, and the students clearly demonstrated their ability to meet the high level of excellence that is expected of them."

Students at Reynolds High School, Mount Tabor High School and North Hills Elementary School all celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month last week through dance performances. Dance is a key expression of Hispanic culture, and last week's celebrations brought hundreds of students and families together to appreciate the beauty of diversity. Student Government Vice President Sally Alcantara, who organized the celebration at Reynolds, says that events like these instill joy and pride in the school's Hispanic community and remind them that they are welcome and wanted in their schools.
"As children of Hispanic descent, it's important that we celebrate our culture," she said. "It makes us who we are."
