The school system is proposing to move the Highly Academically Gifted (HAG) program from Southwest to Brunson Elementary by the 2028–2029 school year. While this may seem like it affects only a small group, the ripple effects could be felt by our entire school community.
Southwest has long been a diverse, inclusive environment where all students benefit from strong academics, dedicated staff, and a vibrant school culture. Removing the HAG program could mean changes in staffing, resources, and class dynamics that affect every student.
We’re asking all parents to speak up—not just those with students in the HAG program. Let the school board know why you value the current makeup of our school and what makes Southwest special for your child.
Board contact info is included—just a few lines can make a big difference. Let’s come together to support the strength and stability of our school community.

Greetings from the Odyssey of the Mind HQ World Finals! We've got an exciting update from our incredible leader, Mrs. Petree! Day 1 has been "insanity, but also incredible!"
The journey to Michigan included a memorable drive through some wild West Virginia tunnels. Our team arrived just in time for the opening ceremony and, in true Odyssey spirit, ended up dancing right in front of the stage! What an unforgettable start! They've already had the chance to see teams from all over the world, including Poland, Japan, Mexico, and Switzerland.
Michigan State University is once again the vibrant host, with over 16,000 visitors and teams staying in dorms on campus. It's truly a global gathering of creative minds!
We want to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has donated and supported our team's journey to the World Finals. Your generosity made this possible! We'll keep you updated on their adventures!

This is a bit of an unusual request, but our wonderful school is in a bit of a bind and could really use your help. 🙏
We are currently in need of copy paper (standard 8.5 x 11). With still 13 days of school left, we're facing a shortage. 😬
If anyone has extra reams of copy paper lying around and would be willing to donate them to the school, it would be immensely appreciated! Every little bit helps our teachers and students make it through these last few weeks.
Please drop off any donations at the school office during school hours.
Thank you all so much for your incredible support! You always come through for our school! ❤️

HUGE congrats to Southwest Elementary's Problem 3 team! They're heading to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Michigan State! 🤩
First team from our school to make it this far! They'll compete against teams from the US & countries like Korea, Germany, China, & Japan! These amazing kids spent months developing their creative solution & rocked the State Finals!
Odyssey of the Mind is a program where students solve long-term problems using teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Teams choose a problem at the beginning of the year and spend time designing, building, and practicing their solution. They also have to think on their feet during the competition in a spontaneous problem-solving challenge.

Today, our amazing 5th graders stepped back in time and experienced life in the American Colonies with the incredible Camp Flintlock, Inc. ! 🇺🇸✨
They didn't just read about history; they LIVED it! From trying on colonial attire at the Dress Up & Store, to mastering traditional games, crafting beautiful necklaces, and even making their own beeswax candles, it was a day filled with hands-on learning and unforgettable moments! 🕯️🧵🎲
This amazing field trip perfectly aligns with our social studies standards, bringing to life the values, beliefs, and traditions that shaped the United States! It's one thing to read about the American Revolution, but to actually experience it? That's learning they'll never forget!
A huge shoutout to Camp Flintlock for their engaging and educational program, complete with a pop quiz and prizes! 🏆 And an even bigger THANK YOU to our fantastic parent volunteers and dedicated teachers who made this incredible day possible! Your support and enthusiasm helped make this a truly memorable experience for our students. 🙌
Let's hear it for our 5th graders – future historians and candle-making experts!

SW Families and Local Businesses! 💚 Remember the thrill of picking out a new book at the book fair? 📖 Let's give that same joy to every student at SW!
Our Scholastic Book Fair is coming soon, and we're excited to offer "Share the Fair" – a program that ensures ALL our students can experience the joy of taking home a new book. Sometimes, students need a little help to purchase books, and that's where you come in! Just a small donation can help a student choose their own book and discover the magic of reading. Let's come together as a community and make this Book Fair unforgettable for everyone!
Donate to Share the Fair and help us put a book in the hands of every SW student.

Today was a day of inspiration and learning as our 1st grade classes hosted a Black History Wax Museum! Each student chose an influential African American figure, wrote a speech, and transformed into their character. Visitors were treated to incredible presentations as our students brought these historical figures to life. We're incredibly proud of the dedication and effort our students put into this project.
Take a look at the amazing moments captured in these photos!
