This week, students at our school were in for a high-energy treat as PE teacher Michelle Whisenant introduced DrumFIT, an exciting fitness activity that combines movement, rhythm, and mindfulness. With the gym echoing the beat of rubber drumsticks on yoga balls, students learned more than just how to keep a rhythm — they explored key life values like respect, emotional control, and personal safety.

Each student was equipped with a large exercise ball placed on a crate or bucket, along with brightly colored pool noodles cut down to serve as drumsticks. With music pumping in the background, the activity became an outlet for both physical expression and emotional growth.

DrumFIT is more than exercise — it’s about engaging the whole self. They focus on strengthening their bodies while also learning to be safe, respectful, and in control of their emotions.

Throughout the sessions, students were encouraged to stay body-aware — watching their personal space and using their equipment safely. They also practiced respecting one another’s space and listening attentively, both of which are essential inside and outside the gym. The activity also provided an outlet for managing energy and emotion through rhythm, helping students release stress in a healthy and controlled way.

Most importantly, DrumFIT got hearts pumping. As they squatted, reached, and drummed in time with upbeat tracks, students strengthened their cardiovascular systems while having fun.

Michelle Whisenant’s dedication to creating a positive, safe, and inclusive PE environment continues to inspire students to be their best selves — physically, emotionally, and socially. DrumFIT week was a hit, and students are already hoping for a repeat performance!
