Jefferson Elementary won a City of Winston Salem Sustainability Award Saturday, April 26th. Tara Brown accepted the award on behalf of Jefferson. Angela Reece was also present. Awards were presented at the Earth Day Fair. Council member Scott Andree Bowen presented the awards to recipients. Over 35 residents/projects were nominated, with 9 total winners. There were 3 categories: Youth Leader of the Year, Resident of the Year, and Project of the Year. Jefferson won Honorable Mention for Project of the Year. Previous Jefferson student, Rachit Chandrakul, won Honorable Mention for Youth Leader of the Year.
**** Sustainable Project of the Year, Honorable Mention - Jefferson Elementary School: In 2024, a school composting program was successfully launched at Jefferson Elementary School, reducing waste and creating a model for other schools - called “Compost in a Box.” Currently, Student Leaders have taken over daily oversight of the program. Over 28,000 pounds of compostable waste have been diverted and unopened food is being redistributed to help students facing food insecurity.
**** Youth Leader of the Year, Honorable Mention - Rachit Chandrakul: Rachit developed an eco-friendly nanotechnology using carbon quantum dots (CQDs) made from banana and orange peels to detect and remove harmful textile dye (methylene blue) from wastewater. His project successfully removed up to 99% of the dye, demonstrating a sustainable solution for industrial water pollution and promoting environmental conservation.
