CONGRATS to Miley Ellis (7th Grade) and Mackenzie Doolittle (8th)

Black History Month is a time to honor the courage, wisdom, and enduring legacy of African American leaders who reshaped history and expanded the meaning of freedom. It is a moment to remember those who stood firm when the world told them to bow, who spoke truth when silence was safer, and who built pathways forward when none existed.
This month celebrates more than famous names. It honors teachers, organizers, artists, soldiers, scientists, and dreamers who transformed struggle into progress and pain into purpose. Their lives remind us that Black history is not a side chapterāit is central to the story of justice, democracy, and human dignity.
Black History Month is also a call to action. To learn deeper. To tell the full truth. To protect the legacy that was hard-won and often denied. And to carry that legacy forward with pride, responsibility, and hope.
We honor the past. We recognize the present. And we invest in a future shaped by truth, equity, and possibility.

Yesterday, February 1st, was the 66th anniversary of the sit-in at Woolworth's in Greensboro, NC.
"On February 1, 1960, four young African-American men, freshmen at the Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina, entered the Greensboro Woolworthās and sat down on stools that had, until that moment, been occupied exclusively by white customers. The fourāFranklin McCain, Ezell Blair Jr., Joseph McNeil and David Richmondāasked to be served, and were refused. But they did not get up and leave. Indeed, they launched a protest that lasted six months and helped change America. A section of that historic counter is now held by the National Museum of American History, where the chairman of the division of politics and reform, Harry Rubenstein, calls it āa significant part of a larger collection about participation in our political system.ā The story behind it is central to the epic struggle of the civil rights movement." -- Smithsonian Magazine -- https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/courage-at-the-greensboro-lunch-counter-4507661/
You can see the original, restored counter at the International Civil Rights Museum in Greensboro, NC. -- https://www.sitinmovement.org/
