The WS/FC Schools Mental Health Department & Forsyth County Behavioral Health Services is partnering to host a community engagement event titled "Real Talk, What's Really Going On?: A Safe Place to discuss mental health & substance use in our community" on Monday, February 23rd at 5:30pm - 7:30pm (detailed schedule below). Hannah Phillips, Community Educator at Forsyth County Behavioral Health Services and I are facilitating this event and are inviting resources throughout Forsyth County to set up resource tables for our families.

The goal of Real Talk is to bring teens and families together to openly discuss mental health and substance use in our community, as well as connect them with wellness and support resources. This event will open with a resource fair followed by separate breakout sessions for youth (8-12th grades) and parents.

Phylicia Rashad made Broadway history in 2004, becoming the first Black woman to win a Tony Award for Best Actress for her powerful performance as Lena Younger in ‘A Raisin in the Sun.’ Despite Black actresses shining on Broadway for decades, no one had ever won in this category—until Rashad.

Beyond Broadway, she became a household name as Claire Huxtable on ‘The Cosby Show’ and has mentored the next generation of Black performers. With a career spanning theatre, TV, and film, Phylicia Rashad is more than an actress—she’s a trailblazer who shattered ceilings!

Porgy and Bess has been debated since its debut in 1935. On one hand, it was revolutionary—featuring an all-Black cast in an opera at a time when opportunities for Black performers were rare. With iconic songs like ‘Summertime’ and ‘I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’,’ it became a cultural landmark. But its portrayal of Black life in Catfish Row has sparked criticism for reinforcing stereotypes. Despite the controversy, Porgy and Bess has been revived multiple times, with stars like Sidney Poitier, Audra McDonald, and Norm Lewis keeping its legacy alive. It even became a Hollywood film and inspired countless adaptations, proving its lasting impact on theatre and opera.

Brian Stokes Mitchell isn’t just a Broadway star—he’s a powerhouse with a voice that shaped musical theatre! Known for his deep, commanding baritone, he delivered unforgettable performances in ‘Ragtime’ as Coalhouse Walker Jr., earning a Tony nomination, and won Best Actor for ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ in 2000. With iconic roles in ‘Man of La Mancha’ and beyond, Mitchell’s talent is unmatched. But he’s also a leader, serving as chairman of The Actors Fund and giving back to the theatre community. A true Broadway legend!

Cicely Tyson was more than an actress—she was a force of nature who changed Hollywood and Broadway forever. Refusing to play demeaning roles, she became known for portraying strong, inspiring Black women. She made history in 2013, winning her first Tony Award at age 88 for ‘The Trip to Bountiful.’ On screen, she broke barriers with her Oscar-nominated role in ‘Sounder’ and captivated audiences in ‘Roots,’ ‘The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,’ ‘Fried Green Tomatoes,’ and ‘The Help.’ With three Emmys, a Tony, and an honorary Oscar, Tyson’s career was more than acting—it was activism, power, and legacy.

Meet Paul Robeson, the trailblazing actor, singer, and activist who made history as the first Black actor to play Othello on Broadway in 1943. While Ira Aldridge had performed the role in the U.K. decades earlier, Robeson shattered barriers in the U.S., starring in a production that ran for over 300 performances—still the longest-running Shakespeare play in Broadway history. Offstage, Robeson was a fearless civil rights activist, using his global platform to fight for justice despite facing government backlash. His legacy is one of powerful artistry and unwavering courage. @RayBaileyTheatre

Happy Black History Month!

Let's share about the history of the name given to describe the people know today as Black people.
The history of racial terminology in the United States is older than the country itself. Since the early colonial era, terminology for people of African descent, in particular, has evolved, been contested, and remains malleable(changeable) to this day. Terms such as “Colored,” “Negro,” “Black,” and “African American” have come in and out of usage and acceptance for a number of reasons. To better understand the terms we used we must think historically about how and why these terms have changed over time. To read more about this history check out the No turning back blog written by Pamela N. Walker. #wsfcs #msmsbulldogs #msbulldogs
