Here are some facts about our learners with Dyslexia. It is estimated that up to 20 percent of the population has some degree of dyslexia. This means in a classroom of 25 students, about 5 will have dyslexia!!

Dyslexia has nothing to do with IQ. In fact, most dyslexics have average to above intelligence.

The brains of people with dyslexia are wired differently. This makes it harder to learn to read but brain differences come with advantages as well. Some strengths include being extra curious, creative and intuitive.

Early signs of dyslexia include learning to speak later than most kids and having a hard time pronouncing words, having difficulty recognizing rhyming words, and struggling to separate sounds in words blending sounds to make words.

Later signs of dyslexia include having trouble with reading fluency, recognizing high-frequency words, learning letters and sounds, spelling decoding and comprehending what they read.

Dyslexia cannot be "cured" but with the right supports, people with dyslexia can learn to compensate.

Most people with dyslexia can learn to read. Research has proven that explicit, systematic, multisensory phonics instruction can "rewrite" the brain and help people who are dyslexic learn to read. Orton Gillingham is a proven approach to teach people with dyslexia to learn to read.

The sooner you can get proper intervention, the soon the child will be on their way to reading success.

Dyslexia and ADHD are often linked. It is estimated that 40% of people with dyslexia also have ADHA. With this combination, they use five times more energy to complete mental tasks. People with dyslexia are not lazy. They are trying much harder than it may seem.

Signs of dyslexia can also be evident in math. Students may have a hard time memorizing math facts, like multiplication facts, and correctly doing math operations.

Modifications and accommodations can be vital for the success of a student with dyslexia. Letting students show their knowledge in alternate ways like verbally answering questions, using talk to text features, or recording their answers. Assistive technology can level the playing field for people dyslexia. Assistive technology includes text to speech software, speech to text software, spell checkers, and grammar checkers to that knowledge is assessed and not spelling, grammar, or writing abilities. People with dyslexia require extra time and effort to process language information. Having extended time on assignments and tests, allowing breaks, and shorting tasks are all beneficial

Our 4th grader, Daniella Tello, did a fantastic job representing Sherwood Forest Elementary at last night's 2025 Superintendent Gallery Reception. This is an extensive exhibit consisting of all elementary, middle, and high schools in our WSFCS district. The artwork is displayed at the Education Building and Administrative Center for 1 year before it's time to select new student representatives
