The Board of Education recognized 34 new and 20 renewed National Board Certified teachers during their last meeting. National Board Certified teachers demonstrate excellence in content knowledge, differentiation in instruction, teaching practices, cultivating a classroom environment, and effective and reflective practice to earn their certifications. WS/FCS supports teachers pursuing this distinction in many ways, including with monthly support sessions, small-group cohorts, and unique opportunities for teachers in their third year. In their latest meeting, the Board of Education recognized Kelly Carr, a student at Reagan High School, for earning the Teaching Fellows Scholarship, a competitive loan providing tuition assistance up to $10,000 a year for qualified students committed to teaching in North Carolina public schools. Cash Elementary School EC Teacher Christy McDougald recently received an Educator of Excellence Award from the Office of Exceptional Children.
Each year, the Exceptional Children’s Division of NCDPI recognizes a special education teacher from each of the state's 117 traditional school districts, and McDougald is this year's honoree from WS/FCS. McDougald has a reputation at Cash for creating an inclusive and engaging classroom environment where every student feels that their personal education is important. Senior Executive Director for Instructional Services Laura Holland said that McDougald "embodies the image of a special education teacher that we want in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools".

Fifth Grade Teacher Kristy Franklin from Ward Elementary School has been named WS/FCS' Outstanding Elementary Mathematics Teacher of the Year.
Every year, the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) recognize math teachers across the state who display excellence in their field by nurturing students' enthusiasm for math. Each school district in the state, both public and charter, acknowledges an outstanding math teacher, and the award alternates annually between the elementary and secondary levels.
Franklin has been at Ward for 16 years and has been praised by her school community for integrating relevant, real-world applications into her math lessons, emphasizing problem-solving skills, and encouraging her students to persist through mistakes.

Jeff Ryan of the Winston-Salem Open presented the Board of Education with a check for $20,000 during their meeting on Tuesday night. Every year, the professional tennis tournament's organizers give some of the event's extra money to the district to benefit middle school athletics, specifically to support Title I schools and districtwide tournaments.
