first Black student to hold a residency at Bowman Gray School of Medicine (now Wake Forest University School of Medicine)

In 1967, he opened a pediatrics practice in east Winston- Salem, and for 20 of his 40 years practicing medicine, he was the city’s only Black pediatrician

He was also the first African American chief of pediatrics at Forsyth Medical Center

One of the eight original Black firefighters hired by the city of Winston-Salem to create the city’s and the state’s first integrated Fire Company housed at Engine Company #4 on Dunleith Ave in 1951

promoted to Fire Chief making him the first Black American Fire Chief in the State in 1980

station was later renamed the Lester E. Ervin Fire Station in his honor
