Books
The Incredibly Human Henson Blayze - National Book Award finalist and Newbery Honoree Derrick Barnes's groundbreaking novel masterfully combines a modern-day allegory with classic-style tall tales to weave a compelling story of Americaās obsession with relegating Black people to labor or entertainment. Spanning the 1800s to today, this exceptional story shows how much has changed over centuries. . . and, at the same time, how little.
This is the 20th annual Bookmarks Festival on 9/27, where they will host over 50 authors:
https://bookmarksnc.org/festival This festival is free to attend!
Students might also be interested to know that Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson series) & Mark Oshiro will be at the Closing Event on 9/27! This is a ticketed event, which includes a copy of the newest book in their Nico Di Angelo series: Court of the Dead. For more information:
https://bookmarksnc.org/FestivalClosingKeynoteWe are so fortunate to have Bookmarks in our community. Without their sponsorship of these authors, we would not be able to provide these opportunities to students.

Please check the district website or this link (
https://assignment.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/transportation/index.php) to find your studentās bus stop information. Make sure your student knows his/her bus numbers: especially the afternoon bus number.
There is also a free app available for our families to virtually track their studentās bus. Please download Edulog and follow the directions for signing up. Our school code is 74254. You will need your studentās school ID number (lunch number) to log in. [

As a reminder, in the morning and afternoon there is a 20-minute window for pick up/drop off. So, for example, if your studentās bus is scheduled to pick up at 6:41 am, the bus may arrive anywhere between 6:31 am and 6:51 am. The first few weeks of school will certainly present varying pick-up times, so we appreciate your patience!
Please email Assistant Principal Mr. Samaniego (
plsamaniego@wsfcs.k12.nc.us) if you have questions.

A big thank you to Ms. LeMay for her hard work in preparing our campus to become a certified ābird-friendly habitatā as defined by the Audubon Society. Sheās taken on the important task of limiting non-native plants and trees to better support the natural wildlife that surrounds LMS. This is just one example of the many ways our teachers go above and beyond the classroom to make LMS a great place to work and learn. #lms
