Phylicia Rashad made Broadway history in 2004, becoming the first Black woman to win a Tony Award for Best Actress for her powerful performance as Lena Younger in ‘A Raisin in the Sun.’ Despite Black actresses shining on Broadway for decades, no one had ever won in this category—until Rashad.
Beyond Broadway, she became a household name as Claire Huxtable on ‘The Cosby Show’ and has mentored the next generation of Black performers. With a career spanning theatre, TV, and film, Phylicia Rashad is more than an actress—she’s a trailblazer who shattered ceilings!

The history of racial terminology in the United States is older than the country itself. Since the early colonial era, terminology for people of African descent, in particular, has evolved, been contested, and remains malleable(changeable) to this day. Terms such as “Colored,” “Negro,” “Black,” and “African American” have come in and out of usage and acceptance for a number of reasons. To better understand the terms we used we must think historically about how and why these terms have changed over time. Here are your remote learning assignments unless you have assignments from your teachers.
Attendance Reminder
Students will be counted present by either:
• completing and turning in Day 5 work (packet or teacher-assigned alternate), OR
• having the required check-ins/communication with their teachers.
Work is due the day students return to school.
Students have up to 5 days to submit make-up work to be counted present. If work is not returned, attendance may be changed to unexcused.

Due to unsafe road conditions in some parts of the county and precipitation in the morning, WS/FCS will hold a remote learning day on Thursday, February 5. All school and district buildings are closed to the public.

Due to continued poor road conditions on residential streets, WS/FCS will hold a remote learning day on Wednesday, February 4. All student activities, including afterschool programs, will be cancelled.
Students should complete the Remote Learning Day 4 assignments for their grade level available on the
WS/FCS website https://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/ unless
your teacher has provided an alternative assignment.
To receive credit for attendance, assignments must be turned in when we return to school. Reach out to your teacher if you have any questions.
School and district buildings will be closed to all staff and students. Only essential Operations staff will report. All other staff may use telework, annual leave, comp time or make up the hours, as their position allows.

Your remote plan is available here! This learning plan will help us prevent disruptions to learning in the event of school closings due to inclement weather.
Here’s how it will work:
Each student in grades 6-8 will receive a paper 5-day Core Remote Learning Plan consisting of five days’ worth of learning activities. The information provided on the paper Core remote plan may also be accessed online through the link below. Students will be required to complete the assigned work for each remote learning day and turn it in when they return to school.
